Ring/sport tactics vs street effective tactics

 When training in the martial arts one of the most popular answers as to why people train is self defense.  But when training for self defense, I.E. combat with an unexpected opponent, different tactics must be employed.  
 
Ring sports are governed by rules but when discussing survival there are no rules.  Tactics like eye gouging and kicks to the groin are not allowed.  But when discussing survival these tactics are allowed.
